Praia do Castelejo is situated on the western Algarve coastline. It is divided from the neighbouring Praia da Cordoama by a distinctive rock formation. At low tide, you can walk across to Cordoama. Castelejo is breathtaking, mainly due to the roaring sea, the winds and the magnificent slate cliffs.
If you need to have some quality time with yourself, Praia do Castelejo is the place to be. It is wihtout my doubt my favourite beach - not only due to being off the radar for a while, but also because it reminds me of Scotland, a country I lost my heart to almost 20 years ago.
There's a saying that you can experience all four seasons in one day in Portugal. This certainly rings true for Praia da Cordoama and its neighbouring beaches.
Situated between Praia do Castelejo and Praia da Barriga, Praia da Cordoama is the longest of these three stunning beaches. Perfect for long walks, for watching big waves, surfing and hill-climbing, it is just as magical as Castelejo - including the Lord of Rings/Game of Thrones feel to it.
What was once a small fishing village in the freguesia of Budens/concelho Vila do Bispo, has turned into a tourist hotspot in recent years. It is hidden in a small valley, right by the sea. It is always worth a visit - and a café and a Pastel de Nata in A Boia.
The Algarve, the southernmost region in Portugal, has its name from the Arabian al-gharb. This means nothing more, than "the West". And the further west you go, the more the Algarve turns into Europe's "Wild West", characterized by rough countryside and wild beaches.
Come on a journey from the east of the Algarve to the westernmost tip of the Old World.
In the Algarve, you can find anything - gorgeous and mysterious beaches most of all, but also cosy towns and small fishing villages.
The longer I live here, the more stunning I find the landscape. When I first got into photography, it was in black and white. There's hardly a better way to play with light, filters and contrasts. Black and white also shows you a completely different dynamic of places, and turns out more dramatic scenes and details.
Black and white photography may be an acquired taste for some. To me, it is still one of the most stunning captivating and expressive ways to capture landscapes, structures, people and more. And even though we all need all the colour in our lives we can get at the moment - black and white will make us appreciate nature's beauty even more.
They say, "Home is, where the heart is." Well, Portugal has now been my home for slightly more than a year, and a big part of my heart is now in the Algarve. However: one tiny piece is in Scotland, and always will be.
Maybe it's the haunting landscape, maybe it's the sometimes dark and tragic history, maybe it's Scotland's stubbornness and wish for independence, maybe it's the unique hustle and bustle of Edinburgh - whatever the reason, Scotland speaks to me and it's where I lost my heart.
I hope you enjoy some of the impressions from travels past.
The land of warrior poets, Whisky, moody skies and bustling cities ...
Back in the olden days, photos were taken with SLR cameras (not the digital ones, mind!) and then developed in dark rooms - an art, which is still popular today, but which has rapidly been pushed to the side-lines by digital cameras and smartphones. I'm guilty as charged, when it comes to the latter - and I actually pick a new phone solely for the quality of the in-built camera.
Long story short: Even though I got "side-lined" by my studies, where I discovered my passion and love for the English & Scottish Middle Ages, I've been passionate about photography ever since that school trip to a little Danish island.
I have been known to drive travel companions, family and friends alike nuts with my incessant need to take pictures of pretty much everything - almost driving my mum to throw my camera into the Arno in Florence.
After moving to the Algarve in November 2019, this passion has reached a new high - and you've probably bumped into me at one of the many beautiful beaches at some point or another, if you can call yourself lucky enough to live here.
Me and my loyal assistants Benjen and Jaime hope you enjoy my pictures. May they be a light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out. May they be windows to a different world (or my view of it) that will brighten up your days - especially in times like these.
... if you're interested in me "picturing your view" or if any of the pictures on this website take your fancy, leave a message or give me a call :)
